Balancing life’s curveballs with our well-being can be quite a challenge. Have you ever felt like you’re either “all in” or “not in at all” when it comes to your health goals? This is how I felt for so long until I had a powerful mindset shift that completely changed the way I approached my health and well-being
And I want to share it with you.
Picture the volume dial on a radio. When it’s at a level 1, you can barely hear the music. But as you start turning that dial, the music gets louder and louder, and eventually if you crank it all the way up, the music is blasting.
We can use this concept of “dialing up” or “dialing down” and apply it towards our health efforts in order to let go of the “all or nothing” mindset that often keeps us from reaching our goals. It acknowledges that our well-being is a dynamic spectrum that can adjust based on life’s circumstances and our individual goals.
The dial method can work with aspect of your health and any area you want to make improvements. So whether you’re training for a 10K race, trying to improve your diet, or navigating the challenges of caregiving, this dial can be your compass toward sustainable health practices that fit seamlessly into your life.
Imagine, for a moment, that you’re training for a 10K race. You’re fully committed – exercising regularly, fueling your body with nutritious foods, and nurturing your mental and emotional well-being. You’re operating at a level 10 on that dial, and it feels invigorating. But life is full of ebbs and flows, and a few months later, you find yourself caught in a whirlwind of unexpected events: a bad cold sidelines you, you’re caring for a sick parent, work demands surge, and your schedule becomes a maze of priorities.
In such moments, The Dial Method becomes your biggest ally. Instead of feeling like you must turn the music off completely, think of turning it down as an intentional action. For example, instead of running 4 miles, exercise might evolve into simple acts like taking the stairs at work, doing squats while you brush your teeth, or incorporating brisk walks during breaks. The key is to modify your health practices to fit your current reality without feeling overwhelmed or like you “should” be something more.
The beauty of the dial concept lies in its flexibility. It allows you to adapt your health efforts without the weight of guilt or the fear of failure. Life is a dynamic journey, and there will be times when you can crank it up to a 10, and times when a 5 or even a 2 is more realistic – and that’s perfectly ok. Thinking on a continuum will free you from the pressure of perfection. It’s not about rigid rules, but about finding harmony with your current circumstances. So, how do you make this powerful mindset shift? Let me share a few tips:
